Wgat Exactly Is Tretinoin?

Tretinoin cream is a generic version of Retin-A. Tretinoin is a topical medication that is the most widely used and well-studied prescription retinoid (vitamin A derivative). Tretinoin is used to treat skin conditions such as acne and a variety of other skin disorders. Tretinoin creams can also be used to improve skin by minimising wrinkles as well as dark spots. Your doctor or dermatologist can prescribe Tretinoin if you suffer from any of these skin conditions.

Tretinoin, commonly known as retinoic acid, is a type of vitamin A that is active. Vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) are one of the most researched categories of skin actives since they function extremely effectively to treat a variety of issues such as acne, pigmentation, and ageing. Tretinoin influences how skin cells grow and develop, as well as how quickly dead skin cells shed. Tretinoin helps to open pores and enables more oxygen to enter. This is brilliant because the P acnes bacteria live in inflammatory pimples and can’t thrive in excess oxygen, so they’re less abundant.

Irritation From Tretinoin

Before getting started it is important to note that the biggest disadvantage of using tretinoin is that it is could cause skin irritation and the use of Tretinoin frequently results in dry, flaky skin that is more prone to stinging and redness.  This is worse in the first few weeks of treatment until your skin adjusts, but for some people, it doesn’t happen at all. Tretinoin is one of the more irritating retinoids, but it also has the most research to back it up. Tretinoin can cause sensitive skin, particularly to sun exposure therefore it is important to use sunscreen as this will act as a skin barrier to harmful rays.

Action Plan For Tretinoin Applicarion

(Before continuing it is important to highlight that you need a prescription for Tretinoin products.)

Skin is totally different from person to person, therefore the amount of Tretinoin that you use will be decided by your doctor. Don’t use more than your recommended dose and don’t apply Tretinoin cream to unaffected areas.

Short contact therapy

This involves applying the substance like a mask and just leaving it on for a short period of time before you wash your face. Clinical trials on acne, demonstrated that daily use of tretinoin 0.05 cream applied for 30 minutes produced equivalent outcomes to leave-on tretinoin, and significantly fewer percentage of participants had irritation, some didn’t even use moisturiser.

Use gallons of moisturiser

Because components penetrate better on moist skin, make sure to apply the tretinoin at least half an hour after washing. After the application of Tretinoin, it is important that you apply anti-irritant moisturisers. You could use a combination of oils as well.  This will help avoid major skin irritation, redness, and other side effects, just take tretinoin as directed. Applying moisturiser right before and after applying tretinoin is one strategy to reduce side effects.

Alternatives to Tertinoin

If you are not keen on using Tertinoin, you could alternatively use Tazorac and Differin. Tazarotene is the active ingredient in Tazorac, and adapalene is in Differin. Both Tazorac and Differin medications are topical retinoids used to treat acne. Both medications are also available in cream and gel forms in various strengths. However, Differin gel is available without a prescription.

Please note that Tazarotene has been found to be the most irritating, followed by adapalene (Differin), retinol, and retinaldehyde. Tretinoin, in particular, causes dryness and peeling.

What Are Retinoids?

Retinoids are also anti-inflammatory, which is great because inflammation is one of the reasons for acne. Retinoids also boost numerous types of collagen in the skin, as well as epidermal thickness and stratum corneum compactness, resulting in younger-looking, plump, smooth skin. Because retinoids enhance skin turnover, they can also trigger purging, which is when a product makes your skin worse before it gets better by causing your skin to discharge all of the baby pimples that were previously there much faster.

How long it will be before I see results?

Tretinoin is not a quick fix. It can take approximately 12 weeks of treatment before you see results. But remember, everybody’s skin is different so this is variable.

Can Tretinoin be used as a treatment for sun-damaged skin?

Skin aging occurs as a result of harmful rays from the sun. It might cause the skin to wrinkle and dark spots to appear. Tretinoin is widely used to treat sun-damaged skin, also known as a treatment of photodamaged skin.
